Dr. Shaikh oversees Thea’s clinical protocols and provider network, so every dosing plan is reviewed against the same standard of care.
Isotretinoin is prescribed only after a clinical evaluation.
Required labs are ordered and coordinated for you.
The FDA boxed warning and iPLEDGE requirements apply at any dose, and your provider walks you through them.
Questions, answered.
What is low-dose Accutane?
Isotretinoin (the active ingredient in Accutane) taken at a lower daily dose than the standard fixed dose, usually for a longer course. The aim is to keep the clearing while easing the dryness and other dose-dependent side effects. Your provider decides whether it’s right for you and sets the dose.
Is it as effective as standard-dose Accutane?
In a 2026 meta-analysis of four randomized trials (202 patients), low-dose and conventional-dose isotretinoin showed comparable results at 24 weeks. A broader 2023 review of 32 studies found clearance rates were comparable in mild-to-moderate acne, but that severe acne responds better to conventional or higher doses and that relapse was more common after lower doses. That’s why your provider tailors the plan to your case.5
How long does treatment take?
It varies. Lower daily doses often mean a longer course, in some cases 18 months or more, compared with several months at standard doses. Your provider will review your progress, labs, and goals along the way and adjust.4
Is this safe?
Isotretinoin carries an FDA boxed warning, including a risk of severe birth defects in pregnancy, plus possible dry skin, lipid or liver changes, and rare mood effects. Lower doses reduce many dose-dependent side effects but don’t remove the pregnancy risk. Your provider evaluates your fit and monitors you with required bloodwork.
Do I need bloodwork?
Yes. Regular labs are required, and your Thea provider orders and coordinates them for you.
What if I could become pregnant?
You’ll need two forms of contraception and monthly pregnancy testing under the FDA’s iPLEDGE program for the full course of treatment.
Is Thea available in my state?
Thea is currently available in select states. You’ll confirm eligibility during intake.
